Situation Report: Providing benefits for TMD

The Situation: The Trustees of a multi-employer trust fund wanted to begin covering TMD, but were concerned over cost and potential abuse.

The Challenge: Demand for TMD treatment varies greatly with demographics, geography and publicity in the media. The client requested approximate costs and guidelines to add TMD benefits to their medical plan.

Actions Taken: Although we are not actuaries, we were able to predict ballpark costs and suggest plan limitations to reduce inappropriate care and unnecessary costs.

The Results: We submitted a report to the trustees, who adopted a plan with limitations. Employees are pleased with the enhanced benefit and the fund trustees were relieved of the burden of an unlimited expensive benefit.
