Situation report: Replacing an external claims administrator
The Situation: The trust fund for a teachers' union wanted to improve service to their members by self administering their dental benefits.
The Challenge: As a group, educators tend to demand large numbers of sophisticated services. Although the group was self-funded, taking over the dental plan administration from a commercial insurance company required new procedures, software and training.
Actions Taken: We assisted in the selection of a software vendor and data transfer, developed a claims manual, trained claims processors, and provided post start-up support.
The Results: Despite poor quality data from the original administrator, the transition to a self-administered dental plan proceeded seamlessly. There were no major disruptions of service and member services response times improved dramatically.
