Situation report: Consolidation of diverse dental plans
The Situation: a large manufacturing company self-funded and self-administered an array of dental plans. Although many of the dental plans were similar in design, subtle differences made administration of the dental benefits cumbersome.
The Challenge: This employer desired to eventually consolidate plans to one master design and needed to know the impact these changes would have on their different units. Some local plant managers operated independently and were expected to resist change.
Actions Taken: We designed a model plan that contained common features, modernized the plan language to reflect best industry practices, and suggested a game plan for implementation.
The Results: The employer immediately planned to implement changes to those units most closely resembling the master plan design. Independent-minded managers were approached for their input to ease the politics of change.
